The Workplace Relations Commission found that a retail business discriminated against a bookkeeper by ending her employment because of her age, and awarded her €12,000. It also upheld her complaint over the failure to provide a statutory statement of employment terms and awarded €630. Adjudication Officer Pat Brady dated the decision 21 August 2017.
The bookkeeper had worked for the business since 2004, and her employment ended when she reached 66. The business argued that retirement at 65 was an implied contract term and said it had offered a fixed-term extension. The WRC found no objective justification for ending her employment on age grounds.
