WRC awards store manager €29,000 for unfair dismissal

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded a store manager €29,000 for unfair dismissal and separately directed payment of €5,323.71 net in minimum notice entitlements. The decision was dated 20 November 2017. The store said management failures involving cash handling, staff hours and attendance justified immediate dismissal. The manager disputed parts of the account and said he was not told the purpose of key meetings, given written dismissal reasons or offered an appeal.

The WRC found he had been summarily dismissed without fair procedures or natural justice. The officer noted that he had not been told in writing what the meetings concerned, given written reasons for his dismissal or offered an appeal. The officer rejected the store’s argument that immediate dismissal required no process and found the manager entitled to six weeks’ minimum notice.
