WRC recommends €3,500 payment to lecturer after conflicting redundancy messages

By Rory Hanlon

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission recommended that a third-level institution pay a lecturer €3,500 after conflicting messages about whether his job was redundant left him confused and distressed. The recommendation was dated 24 May 2017. The lecturer said the institution told him his fixed-term post was redundant and that he was entitled to a payment. He said he had not been told that declining a permanent post would affect that entitlement. The institution said the post was not redundant and that he had turned down suitable alternative work. The adjudication officer criticised the institution’s handling of the communications and its failure to take responsibility for the confusion. The WRC also recommended a documented procedure covering job offers, termination and advice to staff about redundancy rights where alternative work is offered.
