The Workplace Relations Commission recommended that a general assistant at a large store trial working one Saturday a month, with the following Monday off, from January 2018 to January 2019. The recommendation was dated 16 November 2017 and settled her dispute over a change to her established Monday-to-Friday pattern. The assistant had worked two Saturdays a month under protest. She relied on a letter confirming her Monday-to-Friday hours, while the store said her contract allowed Saturday work and that it needed greater staffing flexibility. The adjudicator found merit in the dispute, considering the letter consistent with an agreement that staff could retain existing work patterns unless a change was agreed. The WRC recommended that the trial be reviewed by a joint union-management forum within 12 months.
