WRC recommends disciplinary warnings stand after craft helper refused training

By Fionn Kelly

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC recommended that a craft helper’s verbal and written warnings stand after he refused mechanical training and to carry a radio. Adjudication Officer Gerry Rooney dated the recommendation 18 May 2017. The warnings had since expired under the respondent’s disciplinary procedures. The worker argued that the requirements had not been explained to him. The mining company said they followed a collective agreement reached with his union. The officer found the agreement had followed a ballot and consultation, and that the worker was obliged to meet its reasonable requirements, including training and carrying a radio.
