WRC rejects quality controller’s pregnancy discrimination complaint

By Ruairí Dolan

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed a quality controller’s pregnancy discrimination complaint against a food company in a decision dated 29 September 2017.

She said her interview scores fell after she told the company she was pregnant and that her fixed-term contract was not renewed because of her pregnancy and family status. The company said the second interview was more rigorous, neither candidate was selected, and the project for which the contract had been made had ended.

The WRC accepted the company’s explanation that the second interview was more rigorous and found the contract would have ended regardless of her pregnancy. It dismissed the complaint. Other grounds were withdrawn at the hearing.
