WRC awards deli assistant compensation for employment breaches

By Orla Quinn

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC found a restaurant failed to give a part-time deli assistant written employment terms and treated her less favourably than a full-time employee. The decision, dated 5 September 2017, awarded two weeks’ earnings for the written-terms breach and three weeks’ earnings for the part-time treatment breach. The assistant said she received little or no work and had no written terms setting out her hours. The restaurant did not attend or respond. The WRC found it failed to provide written terms and did not give her work hours or a roster; her employment ended without notification. The officer noted that she did not seek work during January 2017 and made no further contact after 9 February.
