The Workplace Relations Commission awarded a team manager €13,000 after finding his dismissal by a sports club unfair on procedural grounds. The decision was dated 31 May 2018.
The worker said he was summarily dismissed after meeting the club’s chairman and board, with a year left on his contract. The club did not attend the hearing or submit a response. The WRC considered the worker’s uncontested evidence and found he had not been given a fair or reasonable chance to answer concerns about the team’s performance.
The WRC calculated his loss for the remaining contract year at €22,400, after accounting for €10,200 he earned through consultancy work. It also found he had not fully tried to find comparable alternative employment. The €13,000 compensation took that failure to mitigate his loss into account.
