The Workplace Relations Commission rejected a plumber’s claim for reinstatement and compensation after he retired at 65, finding no compelling evidence to uphold it. The decision was dated 22 August 2017. The plumber retired after 37 years’ service. His union said other HSE employees had been retained beyond 65, while the hospital said his contract set the retirement age at 65 and that later re-employment was limited to special circumstances, including staff shortages. The adjudicator said a public service review was considering barriers to extended participation. Until those issues were addressed, continued employment or re-employment past the contracted retirement age on demand would not be appropriate.
