WRC recommends six-month warning and restored staff discount card

By Donal Gilhooly

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC recommended reducing a sales assistant’s final written warning to six months and restoring his staff discount card immediately. In a recommendation dated 12 December 2017, Adjudication Officer Patsy Doyle found merit in the worker’s dispute over a 12-month card suspension and final warning. The employer said five transactions breached its card policy. Doyle noted that an appeal had accepted transactions involving the worker’s mother, leaving two breaches involving his partner and brother. She considered the combined sanctions too severe because the breaches were careless rather than deliberate, brought no personal gain, and a manager could have cancelled the transactions. Doyle also recommended that the employer and union review card use together over the following six months.
