WRC dismisses Traveller discrimination complaints against holiday park as out of time

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC dismissed Patrick Quilligan’s two Equal Status complaints against Alan Skehan and Dunmore East Holiday Park Ltd because they were lodged outside the statutory time limit. Adjudication Officer James Kelly dated the decision 10 April 2018; the discrimination allegations were not decided on their merits.

Quilligan alleged that the holiday park refused entry to him and his wife because they were members of the Traveller community. The respondents said staff blocked entry after a security concern and that the group later became threatening.

The WRC found no reasonable cause to extend the filing deadline. It noted that the circumstances cited to explain the delay had also applied when Quilligan notified the respondents within the shorter notification period.
