WRC finds Kerry hotel did not discriminate by refusing family accommodation

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found that three complainants were not discriminated against when a Kerry hotel refused them accommodation on 14 May 2017. The decision was dated 14 December 2017. The complainants said the refusal was because they were members of the Traveller community.

The first complainant said a receptionist accepted €100 for a room costing €89, then returned the money after the manageress said no room was available. The family said they had to drive to another town to find accommodation. The hotel said it was taking no new bookings because window replacement work was scheduled for the following morning, and that an online booking already made had to be honoured.

The adjudicator accepted that renovations explained the refusal and found that any person trying to book that night would have been treated the same way, regardless of Traveller community membership. The decision found that none of the three complainants had been discriminated against.
