The WRC rejected a night porter’s claim for a share of tips collected at a hotel, finding they were not wages payable under the Payment of Wages Act. The decision was dated 15 November 2017. The porter estimated that about €25,000 was due to him, based on tips paid by tour operators for handling luggage. The hotel said tips funded an end-of-season night out and had never been paid to staff. The adjudicator found the porter’s contract set out an hourly rate and made no provision for tips, so the complaint failed.
