WRC rejects lorry driver's unfair dismissal complaint over wedding leave

By Ruairí Dolan

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed a lorry driver's unfair dismissal complaint, finding the furniture company acted reasonably. The decision was dated 27 February 2018. The driver said he assumed leave to attend a family wedding had been approved after the managing director offered to check the earlier refusal. The company said he took two days off without authorisation while its other driver was injured, despite a final written warning. The adjudicator found the last position communicated to him was that leave had been refused and that he had not appealed his earlier warnings.
