WRC finds medical devices technician was fairly dismissed after removing company equipment

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC found that a process technician’s dismissal by a healthcare products and medical devices manufacturer was fair. Adjudication Officer Ewa Sobanska dated the decision 3 May 2018. The technician said he had removed company equipment without intending to profit from it, describing the conduct as “unauthorised recycling”. The manufacturer said he removed IT equipment from a secure cage without permission and breached site safety procedures. The adjudicator found the technician deliberately removed equipment and concealed what he had done, breached company procedures and gave the employer substantial grounds to dismiss him. The unfair dismissal complaint was not well founded.
