The WRC dismissed a medical doctor's age discrimination complaint against a medical school over selection for higher surgical training. The decision was dated 23 May 2018.
The doctor argued that candidates in a newer training scheme were younger and more successful in gaining places. The school said selection used objective criteria and that candidates in the newer route went through a two-year assessment process.
The adjudication officer found the evidence too limited to establish unlawful age discrimination. It covered one selection year, involved small groups and showed a relatively modest age difference. The officer also considered the training reform and its transitional arrangements objectively justified.
