Lecturer’s bid for contract covering additional teaching work fails

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

A worker’s complaint seeking a contract of indefinite duration for additional teaching work failed after the WRC found she was already a permanent employee. Adjudication Officer Jim Dolan dated the decision 24 May 2018. The lecturer said she had taught continuously in a second school since 2003 and wanted a contract covering that work. The educational establishment argued that she was already permanent and therefore was not a fixed-term worker under the Act. The officer considered Labour Court decisions on whether a permanent employee could also claim fixed-term status and found in favour of the establishment.
