The Workplace Relations Commission found Andrew Champion was unfairly dismissed by Loughrea Golf Club after a fundamentally unfair redundancy process. It awarded him €8,000 in compensation. The decision was dated 13 June 2023. Champion said he had not been properly consulted, while the club said financial difficulties prompted the cost saving measure and that it had consulted him. The WRC found he was not clearly told redundancy was being considered and had no advance notice, representation or opportunity to challenge the decision or appeal it. The commission noted Champion made material efforts to find work and undertook training, but did not make the full efforts required to reduce his losses.
