Equality Tribunal awards employee €7,000 for parental-leave discrimination

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace decision ·

The Equality Tribunal found that an employer discriminated against an employee over parental-leave arrangements and ordered €7,000 compensation. Equality Officer Hugh Lonsdale dated the decision 9 April 2014.

The employee said his work was not covered on parental-leave days and that he was asked to reduce his leave. The employer said it had approved the leave and disputed pressuring him to give it up. The Equality Officer found the employer had not made adequate arrangements to cover his work and that the treatment was discriminatory on gender grounds.

The reasonable-accommodation and victimisation complaints were not upheld, and the harassment claim was out of time. The €7,000 compensation was for infringement of equality rights and excluded remuneration.
