Equality Officer Tara Coogan found David Surridge’s disability discrimination complaint against Coláiste Bhríde School was not well founded in a decision dated 29 August 2008. Surridge’s mother, Debra James, said the school made an educational assessment a condition of his enrolment. He had been home-schooled for seven years and wanted to enter mainstream education. The school said he had a place, but it needed to determine the appropriate year because he had no formal school reports or state exam record. Coogan found no evidence that the assessment was a prerequisite for admission. The school arranged it promptly and at no cost to identify Surridge’s educational needs. She also found the school followed its admission procedures and that its placement decision was unrelated to his disability.
