Labour Court rejects Mandate equal-pay appeal for 61 Power Supermarkets checkers

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court dismissed Mandate’s appeal over equal pay for 61 female system checkers at Power Supermarkets. In a determination signed on 18 June 1998, the Court found they did not perform like work with the goods receiving chargehands used as comparators. The union argued that the Equality Officer had wrongly limited the comparison to one checker and one comparator at the Roscrea store. Power Supermarkets said the comparators had greater responsibility, physical effort and working-condition demands, including forklift duties. After inspecting six representative locations, the Court found greater demands on comparators in responsibility, working conditions and physical effort, but no significant difference in skill or mental effort.
