Labour Court leaves €500 race discrimination award in place on Coalport appeal

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court affirmed the Equality Officer’s decision and rejected Vygandas Urbanovicius’s appeal, leaving a €500 compensation award in place. The determination was signed on 14 January 2011. Urbanovicius, a Lithuanian general operative, had challenged findings on race discrimination and harassment involving Coalport Building Company Limited.

The Court found that Coalport discriminated against him by providing health and safety training and documents in English and Polish when he could not understand either language. It left the Equality Officer’s €500 award for distress in place.

The Court rejected his other claims. It found he had not established discrimination over a written contract, union membership or the pension and sick pay scheme, race harassment, or discriminatory dismissal.
