The Labour Court dismissed a worker’s appeal over an unsuccessful application for cabin-crew training, affirming the Equality Officer’s decision. The Court found the worker’s English communication skills did not meet the required standard, which it said was justified by aviation safety and training needs. The appeal concerned allegations of discrimination on grounds of marital status, family status, age and nationality in access to training. The Court found each complaint not well founded: it found no evidence linking the rejection to marital or family status, and was not satisfied age caused the unsuccessful application. The nationality complaint also failed because the English-language requirement was objectively justified. The determination was signed on 20 June 2014. The employer said the self-funded course cost €1,649 plus a €300 administration fee at the time.
