Labour Court awards teacher €20,000 after public body’s appeal

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court awarded teacher Roisin Leslie €20,000 after the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee appealed a Rights Commissioner’s decision. In a determination dated 24 April 2013, the Court found Leslie had been treated less favourably than permanent teachers on a refugee education programme.

Leslie argued that she did work of equal value to permanent teachers but received less favourable terms. The Committee said the programme’s needs and annual funding justified the difference. The Court found that teachers on standard terms could meet the programme’s needs, and that the extra cost did not justify the less favourable treatment.

The Court ordered the Committee to apply the terms and conditions of Leslie’s comparators from 1 September 2009 and awarded her €20,000 in compensation.
