Labour Court rejects Irish Print Union claim to include overtime in holiday pay

Labour Court ·

In 1986, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Print Union’s claim against Independent Newspapers P.L.C. to include average overtime in holiday pay. The recommendation was signed on 5 November 1986. The union said the agreement calculated holiday pay using average earnings and sought retrospective payment to 1977. Independent Newspapers said the workers’ overtime was voluntary rather than rostered and argued that legislation excluded overtime from annual-leave calculations. It estimated a direct cost of £89,000, retrospective claims of £264,000 and possible related claims approaching £1,400,000.
