In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that a worker made redundant by Hertz Rent-A-Car receive three weeks’ redundancy pay per year of service, inclusive of statutory redundancy amounts. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought a further £8,000 on top of the approximately £11,000 already paid. It argued the company’s offer favoured shorter-serving workers and that the claimant had little chance of finding alternative work. Hertz said it had delayed the redundancy, providing 14 weeks’ extra pay, and that its offer was the most it could afford without endangering remaining jobs. The company also undertook to clarify the worker’s pension eligibility and provide a reference within two weeks of the hearing.
