In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend increasing the night-shift premium for 55 workers at S.P.S. Highlife. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 1987. The National Engineering and Electrical Trades Union and the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union sought to raise the premium for general and craft workers on permanent night shifts from 30% to 33⅓%. They said comparable regional employers paid the higher rate. The company said its existing premium compared favourably, it could not afford an increase, and the circumstances had not changed since an earlier Labour Court recommendation rejected the claim.
