In 1987, the Labour Court recommended two phased pay increases for Siemens Limited’s electrical assembly workers in its dispute with the Marine Port and General Workers’ Union. The recommendation was signed on 4 March 1987. The Court recommended an increase of 3% or £4 a week, whichever was greater, from 1 June 1986 and a further increase on the same basis from 1 December 1986. The agreement was to expire on 31 May 1987. It did not recommend an additional adjustment to basic rates. The union had sought an extra £10 a week, saying the workers’ pay was low compared with similar jobs. Siemens said the rates were not out of line and higher increases could threaten its meter assembly operation.
