In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend that Southern Health Board concede the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union’s claim to move 10 Cork Regional Hospital security workers from Group 4 to Group 7. The recommendation was signed on 6 April 1987. The union said the workers’ duties and responsibilities had increased since they were placed on Group 4 of a national pay structure. Southern Health Board said the workers were covered by a national agreement for about 10,000 staff, and argued Group 7 was supervisory while the security workers had no direct supervisory duties. The Court concluded that their duties had not changed enough to warrant regrading.
