In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding eight workers’ claim for travelling-time payments. The recommendation was signed on 7 July 1987. Plant & Machinery Limited and the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union disputed whether the workers’ travel requirements matched those in the construction industry. The union said the workers delivered and maintained equipment at construction sites and had accepted other industry-standard conditions. The company said they reported to a fixed workplace and were not required to travel as part of their normal duties. The Court found the travel requirement did not equate to that in the construction industry.
