Labour Court declines 15% pay claim at Castle Brand Company

Labour Court ·

In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend a pay increase for about 60 general operatives at Castle Brand Company. The recommendation was signed on 30 July 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union sought a 15% increase, arguing the company’s basic weekly rate of £110 was below an estimated local industry average of about £142. The company cited financial difficulties and spending on machinery and buildings. The Court said current pay levels reflected the company’s financial difficulties and did not recommend an increase at that time. It recommended that the parties review the position early in 1988 after new plant was installed.
