In 1987, the Labour Court recommended two 2% pay increases for about 650 workers at Irish Fertilizer Industries Limited, formerly Nitrigin Eireann Teoranta, after a claim by the Group of Unions: ITGWU, FWUI, NEETU, UCATT, ETU, ASTMS, TASS and AEU. The recommendation was signed on 3 November 1987. The increases were to take effect from 1 April and 1 October 1987 under an agreement ending on 1 March 1988. The unions had sought a 7% increase over 12 months with no pay pause, while the company sought a 12-month pay pause, citing losses and difficult trading conditions. Having regard to market conditions, the Court recommended that the company offer the increases and that the unions accept the offer.
