The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Rail Operatives Trade Union Group's claim for a 12.5% responsibility allowance for 194 train guards at Irish Rail. The recommendation was signed on 11 January 1988. The union group argued that new coaches and safety equipment had increased the guards' responsibilities. Irish Rail said the equipment made existing tasks easier and the duties remained within the guards' normal responsibilities. The Court found there were not adequate grounds to justify an allowance.
