In 1988, the Labour Court recommended an ex-gratia payment of £50 each to two claimants in a dispute between Masser Hammond and Irish Transport And General Workers' Union. The recommendation was signed on 7 January 1988. The union sought a 10% salary increase, citing workers' contribution to computerisation and new responsibilities. The company said operating the system involved minimal change. The Court did not accept that the system warranted additional payment, but recommended the £50 payments in the interest of industrial harmony.
