In 1988, the Labour Court recommended applying the terms of its 1985 recommendation to eight Corbett & Sons Limited workers made redundant after the company closed departments. The payment was to be made in two equal parts, the first immediately and the second at the end of July 1988. The recommendation was signed on 12 January 1988. The Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union sought enhanced redundancy compensation, citing the earlier company precedent. Corbett & Sons said it could not afford more than statutory compensation and extra costs could threaten the business. After examining the company’s accounts, the Court recommended applying the earlier terms.
