In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend revised wage rates for Coiste Naomh Ciaran's ferry crew, but recommended a £4 meal allowance when they had to return to the mainland without a lunch interval. The recommendation, signed on 15 January 1988, followed claims by Irish Transport And General Workers' Union for revised wages, a meal allowance and a skipper's rate for a deckhand acting as skipper. The Court considered the Coiste's offer of assistant skipper's rates reasonable and said it should be accepted. The Coiste had offered that rate for periods when the deckhand acted as skipper.
