In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Dunnes Stores management enter immediate discussions with the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union about staffing and conditions for part-time workers at its Ballyyolane store in Cork. The recommendation was signed on 1 March 1988. The union said many part-time employees worked few hours spread across several days and had limited benefits. It also challenged the store's high proportion of part-time staff. The Court called that staffing ratio unsupportable. Dunnes Stores did not attend the hearing, though it had an opportunity to present its case.
