Labour Court recommends control-room staff accept Group Four’s one-person operation proposals

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended that control-room staff accept Group Four Securitias Ireland Limited’s proposals for one-person operation, with a review in March 1989. The recommendation was signed on 29 April 1988. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought a second worker on duty around the clock, citing the risk that an operator working alone could be taken ill or fall and be unable to get help. Group Four said computerisation had reduced the workload and that safety procedures, along with telephone and radio contact, reduced the risks. It said double staffing would cost an additional £60,000 a year. The Court recommended that the claimants accept the proposals Group Four had put forward at conciliation, including the company’s planned computer handling of calls, weekday switchboard coverage, an overlap hour and £60 net compensation for the four controllers. It also recommended that the parties review the position in March 1989.
