In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that clerical pay scales at W & C McDonnell Limited rise by 5% for eight months and 1% for four months. The recommendation was signed on 6 May 1988. The Marine Port And General Workers' Union had sought a 10% increase for 12 months on behalf of 15 workers. W & C McDonnell Limited offered 4%, later raised to 5%, and said the clerical group’s claimed productivity had already been compensated for. The union cited a staff reduction and additional workload after the Brooke Bond Tea operation was transferred to Drogheda. The Court said the recommendation recognised the different productivity levels conceded by the various groups.
