In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding a union claim to rotate two drivers on Bus Eireann's Galway–Belfast service. The recommendation was signed on 3 June 1988. Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and National Busworkers Union argued that a 1984 understanding supported discussing rotation when the early-shift position became vacant. Bus Eireann said the shifts had always been fixed and rotation would add costs to loss-making services. The Court said the company had no obligation to introduce rotation.
