In 1988, the Labour Court recommended raising the 4pm-to-midnight shift premium at Messrs Plastronix Limited from 16.6% to 18% for workers on two- and three-shift cycles. It did not recommend changes to other premiums. The recommendation was signed on 24 June 1988. The Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland had sought increases across shift premiums on behalf of approximately 300 workers, arguing their basic pay and existing premiums lagged industry levels. Messrs Plastronix Limited cited high labour costs and competition in opposing further increases. The Court considered both sides' submissions before making its recommendation.
