The Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept Roadstone Group’s offer of annual 2.5% increases for three years, pending agreement on cost-reducing changes. The recommendation was signed on 28 June 1988. The union had sought the 4% increase given to other worker groups for about 200 clerical staff and sales representatives. Roadstone said recession and falling construction volumes made higher increases unaffordable, and that the workers’ pay and conditions were ahead of competitors. The Court said increases given to other groups involved changes that would reduce company costs.
