Labour Court recommends back pay and compensation for Dublin Bus shift mechanics

By Ruairí Dolan

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended that Dublin Bus pay shift mechanics the acting foreman’s rate for duties performed from 1 April to 31 December 1987, and compensate workers who lost earnings after foremen were appointed. The recommendation was signed on 22 August 1988. The CIE Shopworkers Trade Union Group sought the higher rate and compensation, arguing that earlier discussions supported retrospective pay and that workers at Donnybrook garage had received compensation in a similar situation. Dublin Bus said the chargehands’ and foremen’s duties differed, and that the new supervision arrangements were intended to improve efficiency. The Court recommended the higher rate only for the specified period, citing planned changes to shift supervision in declining it after 31 December. Compensation was to be based on the chargehands rate and calculated using the company’s customary method.
