In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers Union’s claim against Ulster Bank Limited for emergency call-out rates for security guards. The recommendation was signed on 8 September 1988. The union sought the special rate for guards called in to work on rest days, including to cover for absent staff. The bank argued that the allowance was intended for genuine emergencies, such as alarms or fires, rather than routine cover.
