In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Rail not proceed with disciplinary action against a locomotive driver over three charges concerning timesheets and mileage. The recommendation was signed on 16 November 1988 after a dispute referred by the National Association of Transport Employees.
The union disputed the charges, saying the mileage entry could have been a genuine calculation error and setting out the driver’s roster and travel arrangements. Irish Rail said the matter had been handled through its disciplinary process. The Court noted differing views about custom and practice on two charges and accepted that a genuine mileage error could have occurred on the other.
