In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Marine Port and General Workers Union’s claim against Renault Limited for a computer allowance for stores staff. The recommendation was signed on 22 December 1988. The union argued stores workers used visual display units daily and should receive the 5% allowance paid to office staff. Renault Limited said stores staff used terminals only for enquiries, their work had not materially changed, and office computerisation had brought different changes to duties and skills. The Court found that use of the terminals in stores had not changed since their introduction and considered the union’s case unsustainable.
