In 1989, the Labour Court recommended a flat £6.02 allowance for six days for train guards at Iarnrod Eireann, plus £1.20 for Sunday duty worked. The recommendation was signed on 18 January 1989. A joint examination of pre-trip checks on new equipment and Mark III coaches found they would normally require additional booking-on time. The Court was assured that guards would carry out the checks within their existing booking-on time. It recommended that Iarnrod Eireann and the Rail Operatives Trade Union Group accept amended proposals developed at conciliation and introduce the new safety arrangements from 30 January.
