In 1989, the Labour Court recommended extra redundancy terms for workers at Unidare Transformers Limited after the company decided to close its transformer production unit at Finglas. The recommendation, signed on 25 May 1989, followed a dispute with the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, No. 14 Branch. The Court recommended that suitable jobs arising over the next two years be reserved for redundant workers who applied and were suitable, with selection based on suitability rather than seniority. It also proposed a system to notify workers of vacancies. The Court recommended redundancy payments of 3.50 weeks’ pay per service year in addition to statutory entitlements. The closure followed substantial losses, market conditions and an uncompetitive cost base.
