In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that Youghal Carpet (Yarns) Limited and the Irish Transport and General Workers Union negotiate a new dyehouse bonus agreement. The recommendation was signed on 14 November. The union sought higher bonuses for vatmen, arguing that the night shift’s work affected their earnings. Management said the agreed production quota was not being met, but was open to a re-evaluation of the vatmen’s work. The Court found that changing market requirements had made the 1984 work practices and bonus method unsatisfactory, and recommended that negotiations begin immediately.
