In 1989, the Labour Court did not recommend extending the Mary Street Christmas leave arrangements to Penneys Limited’s other Dublin stores. It recommended that the company’s offer of one additional day’s leave be implemented on an ongoing basis. The recommendation was signed on 14 December 1989. The Irish Distributive and Administrative Trades Union sought the extended arrangements for workers in seven other Dublin stores. Penneys said Christmas trading arrangements reflected different conditions at each store and that the other branches could not afford the same package.
